
mastering is like putting frosting on a cake, getting it ready for the public. think of mixing as a recipe, you need the right amounts of each ingredient(instruments) to get the food to taste like you want it. also, learn the difference, between mixing and mastering, they are two different animals. route all your instruments through insert 1, the compressor will help everything sit better in the mix. also, i like to create a submix on insert 1 to master bus, and add a compressor with a 2:1 ratio with attack around 30 or 40 ms and release around 100 or so. get the levels right first, then eq, compress, etc. also try mixing "dry", first, w/out plugins.

Try this technique when your mixes wont come out right: turn all your faders all the way down, then gradually level up each instrument, beginning with the ones that should be the loudest in the mix, and then level up each instrument in relation to those.
